Do You Need to Preheat an Air Fryer?

Updated October 2026· 5 min read

Short answer: it depends. Many air fryers cook well without preheating, but a short 2 to 3 minute preheat gives better browning and crisping for certain foods, and it makes cooking times more predictable.

Here's when preheating is worth it, when you can skip it, and how to do it properly.

Why preheating matters (a little)

An air fryer is small, so it heats up far faster than an oven. The basket and chamber still need a moment to reach cooking temperature, and food that goes into a cold basket spends its first couple of minutes warming up instead of searing.

For foods that rely on a hot, immediate sear for crispiness, that head start makes a visible difference. Recipes also assume a preheated unit, so skipping it can mean your food needs a few extra minutes.

Think of it like a skillet: a hot pan gives steak a better crust than a cold one. The basket works the same way. The effect is subtle for a basket of vegetables and more obvious for a chicken thigh, where hot air quickly renders fat and crisps the skin. If you notice food coming out pale or taking longer than the recipe says, skipping the preheat is often the reason.

When you should preheat

When you can skip it

Preheating makes little difference when you're cooking food gently or for a long time:

There's one more good reason to skip: convenience. If you're cooking several batches in a row, the unit stays hot between batches, so only the first one benefits from preheating. And if you're short on time, you can simply add 1 to 2 minutes to the cook time instead.

How long to preheat

Most air fryers need 2 to 5 minutes. A small basket model may be ready in 2 to 3 minutes, while a large oven-style unit may need about 5. Set the unit to your recipe temperature, let it run empty, then add the food.

Some models have a preheat button or display that beeps when ready. If yours doesn't, a timer works just as well. For delicate foods, a shorter 1 to 2 minute preheat is enough.

The easy way to preheat

Set the temperature, press start and wait for the timer or the first few minutes to pass. Open the basket carefully, since the air will be very hot, and add the food in a single layer. Close it and set the cooking time. Don't preheat with loose foil or parchment in the basket, as it can fly into the heating element. Add the lining with the food on top.

If you're using the basket right after cooking something else, it's still hot, and the next batch needs little or no preheat.

A handy trick is to preheat while you prep: turn the unit on at the recipe temperature, season and arrange your food, and then load it. By the time your food is ready, the air fryer is too. If you're cooking something with a sticky glaze or cheese that can melt through the basket, load it onto a rack or parchment liner after preheating, not before.

Finally, remember that cooking times in most recipes, including ours, assume a preheated unit. If you skip preheating, add a minute or two and check early.

FAQ

Do you need to preheat an air fryer?

Not strictly, but 2 to 3 minutes helps meats, frozen foods and breaded items brown and crisp. Baked goods and reheating don't need it.

How long does an air fryer take to preheat?

Usually 2 to 5 minutes, depending on size and model.

What if my air fryer has no preheat button?

Set the temperature and run it empty for 3 minutes before adding food.

Is it OK to skip preheating?

Yes. Add a minute or two to the cooking time and check the food a little earlier.
